What is a pip in forex?

A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard price movement in forex. For most pairs, 1 pip = 0.0001 (the fourth decimal place). For JPY pairs, 1 pip = 0.01 (the second decimal place). Some brokers quote to a fifth decimal (pipettes).

For most pairs: Pip Value = (0.0001 ÷ Current Price) × Lot Size × Contract Size. For pairs where USD is the quote currency (e.g. EUR/USD), 1 standard lot pip value = $10. For other pairs, the value varies with the exchange rate.

Why does pip value matter for position sizing?

Pip value converts your stop loss distance (measured in pips) into a dollar amount. Without knowing pip value, you cannot calculate how many units to trade to risk a specific dollar amount. It is a required input for the Forex Lot Size Calculator.

Yes — for pairs where USD is not the quote currency (e.g. USD/JPY, GBP/CHF), pip value changes as exchange rates change. Recalculate at the time you are placing the trade for the most accurate result.
